I had one of those seasons a couple of years ago. Was left with a load of unripened green toms in the green house, hence the switch to the warmer conservatory windowsills.

As for "doing it right" B3, you need to find what works for your space and climate. Good advice already given on feeding and watering. Have you got some big containers? I grew my tall toms in buckets in the greenhouse, one plant in each.

I grow about 3 plants outside and, as it is only 3, I treat myself to grafted plants from the garden centre. They grow with astonishing vigour and cope better with our variable summer weather.

I don't know what it's called but I meant the opaque bit that surrounds the juicy bit @Picidae .
Well if Monty had to chuck his that year too, I'm in good company. I'll try one of the ones recommended Sun gold seems to be a favourite. I have some reasonably big containers. They were big enough to grow dahlias last year so they should be ok.
    Thanks for the advice ,all

Sincere apologies, B3. I’ve just looked it up and tomatoes do have pith, a tiny area around the stalk. I think the botanical term for the part you are describing is the pericarp.

I seem to remember reading an RHS tomato trial report last year in which Gardener's Delight lost its AGM because the stock is so diluted the seed is no longer true.

We grew lots of different varieties last year to see what did well.  Loved the big fat Marmande and Beef tomatoes in red, orange, yellow and green forms but not so much the black Brandywine.   Loved the little Yellow pear and medium sized Green Zebra.   Grew some in the PT and others outside.

I am trying 2 varieties recommended by GW magazine plus sun gold and tigerella as recommended by forum members. There was a very interesting thread on here regarding tomato varieties we should revive that. Lots of useful growing tips too!
  • First year in growing tomato from seed, got a packet of gardeners pearl  I usually grow from shop bought tomatoes and have got a great tasty harvest.
