The first time I grew Dahlia Cafe au lait, I said I wondered why I bothered with a bouqet. I could have just had the one huge flower. Dahlias are repeat flowerers , so ideal for weddings. Trying to grow a flower that only flowers once is much harder to time. Gladioli we had to plant in succesion to get the timing right. I had an October wedding, and apart from my bouquet, all the flowers came out of my garden. It doesn't work if you want a really formal look, but then I've never been that sort of gardener either.  The following year I grew a load of sweet peas for someones wedding in the summer months. She had a long table and jam jars of sweetpeas  all down the centre run.

Dahlias come in all shapes and sizes so as long as you have plenty of established plants you can have lots of flowers.

I also did my own dried rose petal confetti, considering how much companies charge for them - and then forgot to bring them on the day.

I have a few dahlia flowers at home, but I would never be able to imagine it as a wedding flower. In flower arrangements combined with more delicate flowers, especially for me, the dahlia has a powerful aroma. I recently had an outdoor wedding in the most beautiful nature park, so I kept the whole wedding rustic. I am madly in love with fresh flowers and use only them for decoration, and I chose spring because this is the most blooming time of the year. So in addition to the fact that nature itself was the main decoration of the wedding, I had my favorite flowers - peonies.

For my daughter’s wedding, we bought bedding plants from Homebase! The colour scheme was purple, and I got polystyrene boxes of violas for each table, and wrapped purple and lilac tissue paper round them to hide the boxes! Looked very pretty, and towards the end of the evening, we told the guests to take them home with them to plant. It was very popular, saw lots of guests heading off happily with the little flowers nodding their heads.

What an excellent idea @Ergates.  That could be done several days ahead of time, so less stress the day before.

I second the vote for Zinnias.  Easy to grow, lots of colors, and they stay nice as cut flowers for at least a week.. so you could get most of the arrangements ready a few days before.  Just add the more delicate flowers the night before.
