Pruning a Cherry Laurel

Newbie here, I'm looking to start pruning in the next few months, I was wondering if I pruned some leaves off now that are a bit brown, would 2 or 3 new leaves off shoot in the place of the stem? Or for more growth do you HAVE to snip at branch level?
