Pretty shrubs

  • Weigelas are good for midsummer flowers too, shades of pink and red. Bristol Ruby is a good red one. There is a variegated leaf one with pale pink flowers, but I took a cutting from a branch that reverted to plain green and much prefer it as it looks less fussy! They are easy to grow and tolerant of being cut back hard if you can't keep up with the pruning for any reason.
When we first moved here, there was a huge one taking up all the space, in a little plot by the back door that was in need of much more varied planting. I cut it down to the ground, dug it up and replanted it elsewhere, fully expecting it to die, but it carried on for many years before the honey fungus got it.

Yew tree, okay it's not a shrub, but would like nice near some yorkshire stone.  Or maybe a pittosporum.

Ceanthos with very pretty blue flowers comes in different varieties. I like 'Autumnal Blue' as it flowers in late summer/early autumn so prolongs the flowering season. Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Variegatus' is a holly-like evergreen, slow growing, easily pruned and grows dome-like. Lovely for winter interest.
