Fish blood and bone

Is fish blood and bone harmful to wildlife. I had a box left over which I wanted rid of as is was getting damp in my shed. I dug it into a patch of soil and I noticed any insects that came into contact with it were writhing around like I'd covered them in salt. Worms,a beetle of some sort and a few ants were very distressed

  • The worms in particular were writhing around in agony
  • I have absolutely no bioligical or scientific understanding of why it would be harmful, but it just sounds very unpleasant by name - so I think yes, it is.

I realise that probably isn't very helpful.
  • Cheers James it just wasn't very nice to see. Mind you I remember handling it in the past without gloves and it burnt a small cut I had like salt

It's a natural fertiliser made, as the name suggests, form fish blood and bone to provide NPK.  In concentrated form it would be poisonous or, at the very least, an irritant.   Scattered loosely across the surface of a pot or bed or worked in around plants it's fine as it's diluted.

Must say, l have never heard of it affecting worms etc. like that. I wonder if the fact it had got damp had changed it in some way ? I have used it in the past and l am sure it must have landed on ants etc but l haven't seen that reaction.

As Obelixx says, it's because a lump of BFB is concentrated and will cause irritation.
When used as directed it is beneficial to both your soil and all that live in and around it
