hardy fuschias

Morning,
Can anybody please tell us when is the best time to repot hardy fuschias.  They flower every year brilliantly but sadly with regards to repotting not been done for some 5+ years.

What size pot do we go up to please i.e. 1 size bigger or more.
Regards
Maggie Bray

Generally speaking plants get moved up one pot size at a time but with an established fuchsia you could also go up 2 or 3 sizes.  The main aim is to give them some extra nutrition from fresh compost and more space for their roots to grow.  However, if you like their current pots, you can achieve this aim by taking them out of their existing pots, shaking off some of the old compost, trimming any very long or twisted roots that are circling the pot and then re-potting with fresh compost.

The best time to do this is early spring as new buds show as they will appreciate the energy boost.  At the same time, trim off any stems that are damaged and all the dead ends of stems above new buds.

What size pots do you have now?
Do you want the plants to grow bigger?

If you are growing them on then I would chose something that you can get a couple of hands full of compost in the bottom and comfortably pour or hand feed / dribble down the sides of the pot and around the rootball. And not have to try and poke or jam your fingers into the gap to get the compost in.

If you like to keep them in pots and they are big already I would root prune and reduce the tops as you usually would, do you cut them hard back each year or just a bit?

Sorry for the questions but it will help others replying.
Sounds like they have been happy flowering madly :)

Oops as Islander said they can be quite vigorous, so if you feel yours are, I would go larger too.

  • Thank you everybody for your help it is much appreciated.
