Is this rose diseased?

I bought this bareroot rose online and recieved it like this, it appears unhealthy and the stem seems to have canker but I’m not an expert.

I have contacted the seller who are an established plant nursery and they tell me the appearance is normal due to dormancy period. However, I’m not convinced and was wondering if anyone has similar opinion to mine.

Thank you again x

  • That doesn't look normal to me. None of the roses I've bought over winter have looked anything like that. not an expert though by any means, it's my first year planting roses so I can't advise as to what's wrong with it.

It's not normal, at least it wouldn't be from the places I normally buy my roses, but I don't know where you got this from...
..it's a shocking example of a bare root rose.. I don't know what you paid for it, but you should contact them again asking for a refund or replacement...

..but saying that, roses are tough and in all likelihood, this one will grow if planted, but for me it's a case of simply not good enough on the part of the nursery and they shouldn't be allowed to get away with it...

I think it is damaged, someone may have dropped something on it that has scraped off the bark, probably last year. Top of the root doesn't look good either, pretty feeble specimen, only one main shoot. Make a fuss.

Looking at the packaging I think I know where you got this from and I'm surprised at them as they would be one of my favoured suppliers...  rather disappointing, .. do what BL above says, and make a bit of a fuss..   I expect you paid about £12.00 for it..?? plus delivery..

  • @Marlorena, not sure if I’m allowed to say but I will anyway, it’s from beechwood nurseries also known as 3fatpigs. I did pay exactly that but expected a better specimen tbh.

I have been in touch with seller but the person sounded quite arrogant and didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with the plant. I have asked to return it for a refund which will cost me so I’m in two minds whether to plant it or return it and learn from my mistake.

Thank you for all your replies and confirming my fears that it isn’t normal for a rose to look like this.

aah ok... not the nursery I thought... which I'm rather pleased about in a way, they don't normally send out ones like that..

I've never ordered from that supplier, … so you learn from experience but that's not what I call good customer service...  and when you think that rose is available pretty much everywhere...
