I'll be lifting and splitting many of mine to move into my new border. I like to see the "bullet" shoots so as to make informed choice where to wield the knife, but it's not critical. I do , however, always water mine in. I see no reason not to and , as with all other new planting, it settles the soil into any air gaps.
@Purplerain There won't be anyone around when I use the bread knife apart from the birds so no one will be at risk. Could get stopped on the way to the allotment for carrying an offensive weapon. @Hostafan1 I take it you will be waiting a while yet before splitting. To water or not to water... Two different opinions but with all your plants and love of them I can't go far wrong. Many thanks to both of you for taking time to reply.
I do mine in spring too as I found the ones I did one autumn all sulked and some failed.
I water well before I try and get them out of the pot as it makes it easier and I water again after re-potting because, as Hosta says, it settles the compost and the roots need help after being hacked up with a bread knife.
