Dahlia Tubers

I bought some Dahlia tubers from my local Garden Center. £25.00 worth.
When I took them out of the packets at least 90% of the tubers fell off
or were broken.
What I had left I have put into compost to sprout. That was on 25th Jan and
they have been on the bedroom windowsill and kept moist.
Do you think they should sprout soon or do you think I have got rubbish
tubers.

The tuber has to have a flower stalk from last year, if it hasn’t, I doubt it will grow.
    Should look like this

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • 99% of them have the stalk. A couple only have the stalk but no Tuber.

Your dahlia tuber needs to have eyes ( google - dahlia eyes  ) they are just at the top of the tuber just before the stem starts. The tuber its self is just a storage vessel for the plant, they still may grow roots but never get a stem . Sometimes I tip them out of the pot to see how they are doing.
