Palm too big

We have a palm tree (fan type) in our small garden in our border which is nearly as tall as our end terrace house.  We love it but want to cut it down by a few feet.  How and when should we do this?

    Unfortunately, cutting the top off of a palm tree will kill it, as that is the only part which is actively growing.  They don't produce side branches like other trees.  It might take a couple of years or more for the lower fronds to naturally die off, but when those are gone no more new fronds will grow.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    This is a stunning tree, a real focal point. However Bob is right - these trees cannot be successfully pruned.
