Advice Please

Last year after watching Carol on Gardeners World I took these cuttings Roses and Forsythia never done this before. They seem to have taken. I only lost two which was a shock to me I didn't expect any to take but now what do I do now can I separate them now if not when and should they be put into bigger pots or the ground, how long will they take to get to a good height they are all climber the roses that is.

Hi, what time of year did you take the cuttings?  If it's been a whole year, I would leave them be till the end of March say, then gently dig them up and repot them into suitably sized pots according to the root sizes and grow them on until next autumn when they can be planted out. If it hasn't been a whole year, then just leave them until the autumn.

  • Hi, Lizzie27, I think it was around September/October last year. I put about 6 in each pot as our soil it terrible and we have put about 4 inches of a mix or horse manure and compost (home made but not fully rotted down). We the put cardboard on the top we've done this as our soil is clay and in the summer we have massive cracks all over the garden. So you can see why we put them in pot to see if we would be lucky.

You need to leave them in the pots until at least this coming autumn really, to be sure they have formed good strong roots.  Rose cuttings can live a long time and even start sprouting shoots in the spring without any roots forming.  The first roots are extremely fragile and are easily knocked off completely if you try separating them after just a few months, as I found out the hard way..

  • Thanks, BobTheGardner, I haven't taken then out of the pots but given them a slight tug and they stayed put. I can't see any roots coming through under the pot so will put them back round the side so I'm not tempted. Does it also apply to the forsythia I think 4 out of the five might have taken of them. It's so exiting creating new plants or as Monty Don would say plants for free. I can see gardening is a waiting game plant, sow or take cuttings this year and wait for next year. Thanks again.
