What is this?!

We have this lovely shrub in our garden - it’s flowering now & smells gorgeous. Please can anyone tell me what it is? Also, the first year we lived here I cut small branches to bring into the house as they smell so lovely, but this seemed to result in much fewer flowers the next year - was this likely to be because I cut it or just coincidence? Thanks in advance

Its a  Daphne odora.  It does not like much pruning, so  yes, you are cutting off next years flowers.
  • Thanks 😀
  • I think I can see yellow edges to the leaves so likely Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata'.  The scent is gorgeous so I can understand wanting to bring indoors.  You could try taking just a flowering tip or two off and floating in a small bowl or cup of water.  That shouldn't really affect flowering next year and I think you'll be surprised at how much scent it will produce indoors. :)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thank you 😀 I will give that a try. Can I take cuttings to try & grow some more??!
