Camellia cuttings

When is the best time to take leaf bud cuttings,  and why?
I know that they can be taken on any type of growth.  Just wondered which would be most successful.
Would it also work for rhododendron?
Are there any other plants where this technique would work well?
How long before leaf bud cuttings of the camellia produce roots from being in a cold frame?
Thank you in advance.

Leaf bud cuttings are semi ripe cuttings and should be taken in late summer/early autumn. They should root by the following spring. Nodal cuttings are said to be faster than internodal. I think Carol Klein showed this in the last series of GW.

You can try hardwood cuttings now which should root in about 3 months with a bit of bottom heat. Or you could try layering but that is a slow process.
  • Rhododendrons can be propagated using semi-ripe cuttings but are a bit tricky - they take several months to root and are quite hard to grow on, once they've rooted.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

How would I cut the stem for leaf bud cuttings, I know to cut above a leaf bud, so does that mean then cutting an inch or so below the leaf, meaning only one node (the leaf bud)?  Aren't most cuttings internodal, ie cutting above a node at the bottom and above one at the top?

I've done a layer last September, but not sure whether to check it yet.

Best way to get a new plant off a rhododendron is to have a look at the base and see if there as a stem rooted. If not choose a nice one dig it under the soil, place a brick on top to keep steady and next year it should have rooted🤞 I have succeeded many times using this method
