  • It’s a rose of some sort ... possibly a rambler?

Given that it's been planted right against what appears to be a wire fence, I'd think it was/is certainly either of those two options.....a rambler or a climber.  It looks healthy enough from what I can see.  Give it a Spring feed, clear the ground around it, give it a prune, and wait to see what happens.
    Hopefully a nice surprise!
that's a good point. i'm hoping for a nice surprise.

Yes it's a rambling rose... do you know how big it is? it doesn't look very old, those are young canes... perhaps there is a lot more of it?... this may mean nothing to you but I would guess it's of the Wichurana class as the foliage is glossy and there is no fringing on the stipules... so if the flowers are white it  might be one like 'Alberic Barbier'... but there are many different ones out there...

Wait until it blooms in June then get back...

  • Yes,would love to see a pic of it in flower later on!    I love finding strange things in the garden,so far discovered a mining pick head, planning on getting the rust off,and hanging it on a wall, then last week I found an old ink bottle, that's cleaned up nicely! At least I think it's an ink bottle, thick uneven glass?!

But if it is an old rambler and it gets cut back now, will it flower this year?
Unless it is a modern repeat one, or will an older variety just put some late flowers on if the stems mature enough.
It looks like nice fresh rambler growth already.

It will be the case that, if the member has cut this rose back really hard, then they will have removed most of the flowers for this season, providing it's a once blooming rose... some ramblers of this type.. i.e. 'New Dawn', which it could also be looking at those pics. should repeat, so in that case there will still be flowers to be had...

More photos and information would be nice...

it's an old plant, it's been there for some years i would say but it was in amongst some large bushes that had strangled and significantly shaded it. i have now cut these back and allowed it some freedom so hopefully it will grow now. i will try and remember to picture it in June..!
