Assuming they're in your house somewhere the extra heat will be contributing to them getting leggy. Turn off the heat as soon as they've germinated. The heat is encouraging growth but there isn't enough light. Try tickling the seedlings a couple of times a day to simulate a breeze. This will encourage the stems to thicken.
  • Yes there in the house So would you say as soon as the seedlings come through turn off the heat and remove the lid ?

I do start some seeds early as I believe a good root system is vital. Here in SW Scotland the lack of natural heat, but good light means that I do it differently. I start them off in February in a propagator and as soon as the cotyledons are strong enough, I remove them from the heat.

I then put them into little plastic indoor greenhouses at around 10 degrees and when they show true leaves, I pot them on, to be planted out or in depending on the Summer we get.

We all live in different parts of the country, and all give our best advice. I hope that the various posts have helped Mark.

That's normal Mark. Once the majority have germinated, switch the heat off and ventilate. As you say, they're in the house so will not get a temperature shock. If you do use supplemental lighting then you can leave the heat on longer.
  • So do i only want to leave heat on if i have lighting aswell ? The ones that i leave on the window do i want to switch the heat off once they have popped through , and also the ones with the added light do i leave the lid on or off

If it is a large propagator with vents you could just open the vents for a few days and then take the lid off. If it is quite small or has no vents, take the lid off.
