What type of shrub is this?

Can anyone tell me what this large shrub is? It's deciduous and doesn't flower (photos taken last July). Thank you.

This looks like a Forsythia shrub. Not 100% as I'm not that familiar with this shrub. Others might offer more views.

Could you have missed flowering due to pruning back late in the year? The top photo looks like it's been pruned back mid to late summer.

The leaves make me think forsythia too, the bright red stems are making me doubt myself.
Agree with Borderline about the pruning. Forsythia flowers on old wood (the previous years growth), which has probably been chopped off to give your shrub that ball shape.
  • Thank you both! I'm definitely guilty of pruning at the wrong time of year...we moved in last July and it was overgrowing the gate so I was eager to chop it back right away.

I don't think it's Forsythia - neither the stems nor the leaves look right. The leaves and stems on the close-up pic look like Prunus lusitanica (Portugal laurel) but I think that's evergreen.......
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Could it be a Photinia, that spelling is wrong but try looking up Red Robin as a variety.
  • Could it be drymis?

It does look like drimys, but I thought they were all evergreen.
