Planting under and by 8ft conifers

I have a hedge of about 4 conifers about 8ft. I have made a new bed that comes out from under them. I can fill the bed but there is a big gap that I need to fill. What can I out there. Its South facing so gets the sun most of the day.

Under a leilandii hedge, we created a new border (previously grass / south east facing) and planted rudbeckia Goldstrum/Henry Eilers, Salvia, hebe and sedum after rotovating with loads of manure and they seem to be doing okay over the last two years. I also mulch every year with a thick layer of compost as the conifers can suck out the moisture!

One thing to be aware of-you’ll have difficulty pruning your hedge when the border is in growth as the clippings will smother everything and picking this up by hand will take hours. I overcome this by pruning in winter after checking for birds etc by laying a great big tarp over the border.
  • I love most of them plant. Thanks for the great advice.
