Fertiliser in February

Hi,

The weather is pretty mild right now, so i was thinking of getting on with the Spring routine

So 2 Q’s:

1) Is it ok to clear borders and apply Fertiliser (BFB and Chicken pallets) now in Mid Feb? Any Side affects?

2) Am i Ok to plant new plug plants (lupins and fox gloves)?
The one i planted last earlier are already coming up, so i was hoping that if they can manage the morning frost the new ones should be able to cope as well. Any experiences?

Thanks!

I have some chicken pellets ready but personally am going to wait until around Mid March (weather permitting). With regard to the plug plants, l wouldn't plant out the lupins until much later when the risk of frost has passed. Not sure about the foxgloves, how big are they, and are you keeping them in a greenhouse or coldframe ?
  • There is still chance of frost and possibly snow in February, plants are starting to wake up, but I would wait until March before applying any fertiliser to them If they start growing too quickly any young growth would be damaged by bad weather.

What size are your plug plants? If they are only very small it might be a good idea to pot them on a bit before planting out to give them a better chance of survival if the weather does take a turn for the worse.

I'm eager to 'get gardening seriously' too, but have learnt from experience over the years, and now take heed of Mother Nature.

I put Fish Blood and Bone on my borders every February, never have a problem, it's slow release so takes a while to get going.
