Can I put a tree here?

Hello hope someone can help?

Would love to put a tree in the centre of the raised bed. Or a tall shrub something!?!? Need it to be 2.5 / 3 meters tall.

Mainly to block a neighbour's window which looks straight into our garden & living room.

Have seen a James grieve Apple tree for £10.00 ( growth & spread on ticket )
Would this be any good? Would the roots damage the wall down the side?

Thanks in advance for any help

I don’t think there’s enough room, when the label says 5’  spread, it means in all directions. Not only width but depth as well.   It will be ok if you can move the shed.

  • Thanks Lyn, back to the drawing board 🤔

Sorry, Lewis, but you need to think practical when you plant a tree, it won’t stay long like that little stick you buy😀

  • 🤣 stupid boy 😂 just really want one!

Lyn have you had any luck with bamboo or any other tall shrub??
  • You need some of that builders' metal reinforcing mesh they put in concrete, fixed to strong posts in front of the shed and then train an evergreen shrub to cover as much of it as possible.
Pyracantha would be good, though it is a prickly character, as it has strong stems, white flowers in early summer and bright berries (choice of colour) in autumn, plus glossy green leaves all year.
You could even pleach it, like a hedge on stilts, so you could reach the shed for maintenance painting, though it would be a fiddly job. On the other hand, your shrub would offer some protection to the wood.
You could grow some fast growing annual climber for the summers for the first year or two, while your chosen shrub/climber is getting established.
  • Thank you buttercupsdays, deffo gonna look at that x

I have a huge clump of bamboo, that would be fine,  it’s  grow 8’ here, but do make sure you get a non invasive one or it will come up everywhere from your garden to the end of the road! 😀
It grows very quickly, not a very pretty plant though.
Just took this, it has never popped up anywhere else and you can just cut the canes to the ground if it gets too wide for you.

One other option is erect something in the foreground, some kind of arch/trellis type thing, perhaps where the lawn starts. Grow some scented climbers up and not only will it block their view but will give you lovely scent when the windows are open or sitting on your patio.
  • Flinster awesome! Cheers

Or make a bed in the centre of the lawn to plant a tree.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
