Fairy rings

This time last year we had 2 foot of clay soil removed & replaced with new top soil and turf.  Initially this was a luscious green sward which we kept watered throughout the hot summer. During the autumn it was a little patchy with some areas greener than others. Last week I noticed large rings had appeared over a large area of the new lawn.  I understand this is a fungal infection and the only way to eradicate it is to replace 1ft of soil & re turf it.  Should we expect the original contractor to do this again or is it just bad luck?

    You can get round it without having to replace the turf, whether the contractor would agree to replace it for free depends on their terms and conditions l would guess.

    As I understand it there are no longer any chemicals available to domestic gardeners for treating fairy rings.    However, you could try and weaken it by aerating the current ring and the area just outside it by pushing your garden fork down as far as you can and wiggling it back and forth to increase air and drainage for the grass roots.   Applying a bit of fertiliser may help to strengthen the grass.
