House Plants

Hi Guys,

Thanks for welcoming me this community! I need to pick up some new house plants today as I'd like to bring more life into my home. I don't have a garden space as live in a flat so need to be able to grow these plants in indoor environments only.

I live near a big B&Q so would if you can recommend anything that would be readily available in store as this would be really handy!

    Hello and welcome.

It would probably be helpful to know how much light and sun you get in your flat and if the windows are away from radiators. Any other relevant info would help as you need to pick plants to suit the conditions and to suit how much care you're willing to give them.

B&Q, at least around here, have gone really down hill in terms of house plants but there are some worth rescuing from them. Every house needs a peace lily and they usually have those, they're not too fussy on light levels and do a great job at cleaning the air. You can put them slightly to the side of a window so they're not blocking all your light.

Ikea are usually a safer bet for house plants if you can get to one of their stores. I bought a nice spider plant from Morrison's for a couple of quid recently too and I've been surprised how good their plants can be. Don't forget mail order too, Ebay often have some great deals on rooted cuttings if you're willing to spend the time growing them on. It works well for me as the plants grow to suit your house rather than buying mature plants that have to adjust to different conditions to where they were grown.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • My B&Q actually had some nice foliage plants, a week or two back, but they were all labelled just as that: 'foliage plant', so not very helpful!
I  already had several of them, but picked up a lovely Ctenanthe. Recognised it as Maranta-ish, but had to look it up, when I got home, to find actual identity.

Our local B&Q has reasonably good houseplants if you get them when they're fresh in, but they are in a corner of the the store and don't really get enough light so they seem to deteriorate fairly quickly.  In particular they often have pretty big plants at reasonable prices.  The "foliage plant" labels can be a bit of a pain though.  Take photos and post them on here if you want help with IDs before you buy.

ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is a good choice for a dim corner, is OK if it's a bit on the dry side and doesn't seem to need frequent misting (don't know if B&Q have them though).

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
