What is happening to my Ivy column?

I have had a very healthy ivy column growing round a washing line post for years - until this autumn, when the section from ground level to about three feet up suddenly lost all the leaves.  Is it dying? If so, why does the rest of it look healthy still?

    If you can work out what killed it, I suggest you patent it and start a small business selling it ;)

    My daughters dog sometimes pees on it....but not all round it to three feet high!
