The trouble with medicine tends to be that without taking the person apart, you can't be absolutely sure what the matter is... hence different diagnoses. To some extent, it must be educated guesswork.
Which is why I'm with you, @B3, on fixing things. I fixed the little electric hand mixer we were given for a wedding present, on a regular basis - taking it apart, cleaning it and putting it back together again - for 30-something years, until it finally started producing black smoke and I thought it might be time to replace it. And every time I took it apart, a spring flew out of the works and I had to decide how to put it back...
Speaking of fixing things, they turned our gas on, 10 minutes ago!! We will get 5 days' compensation payments, too.

We went out for lunch to celebrate. Compensation will be £300, and we've not spent a lot using the fan heater... ...sorry, not being a curmudgeon, but no doubt I'll think of something to grump about before too long...

What is it with men and machinery? OH's lawnmower is having problems starting (pull cable thingy). He has tried to get a replacement but no joy, as it is over 25 years old. I advised biting the bullet and buying a new one as heaven knows he has had good use out of it but no. He reckons he can fix it. I await the day when he ends up either on his backside when the pull thing snaps, or he does his back in. Good job l love him dearly
@AnniD - I had the same problem with my pull start Mountfield petrol mower but found if I took the cover off the filter intake (the little square flat box thing) before I tried to start it, it worked every time. Just remember to put the top back on! Even after a proper service I still couldn't get it to start without doing that! Worth a try unless he has also tried that. My Honda Izzy-start starts easily first time however!
