FWIW I think you only need to get the crowns out not the whole root, which means it's a little easier when the damn things are growing through the base of other plants.
Thanks Bob and Skandi - I'd forgotten about SBK brushwood killer, it's good stuff and don't think I have any left. Picked out most of the bramble prunings which a very kind neighbour will take to the tip tomorrow. Managed to find some cheap woodchip which is being delivered tomorrow. Hope I've ordered enough!
Sorry , don't mean to be the bearer of bad news ,but a friendpf!one bought some cheep woodchip.in the damp weather of that year her wood chip got mouldy and very strong smell . The cheep wood chip turned out that the tree used had only been cut down a few weeks before and not dried out properly, hence the strong smell and the mould. she lost some of her young plants of that year too.I hope yours is ok .
Thanks for the warning Granma, sounds like the stuff I bought but I'm not worried about it as it's not near any plants. I only wanted to cover up the debris and make it look a bit better for the neighbours who look out on the verge - we can't see it.
I always worry about what might be coming in with bought-in wood chip. If the tree it was made from was cut down because it was diseased, what are you importing???
I'm not worrying about that, I've never heard of any big problems arising from contaminated woodchip. I wouldn't necessarily put the cheap stuff on my flower beds but where I've put it is not a problem. If it actually kills the horrible berberis hedge I shall be overjoyed!
If you've got the space then bramble wood burns really well. I cleared lots last year and I found even the green stuff burnt well once the fire was going.
