I have been offered some bits of sheep fleece (the left over grubby bits not suitable for spinning). Can I use these in the garden as a form of soil conditioner or compost and, if so, how

The wool pellets are used to keep slugs away, just bought a small bag for £5! You are lucky to have it for free, so definitely use it in your garden

Yes definitely use it, there is a composted wool & bracken compost made under the name Dalefoot as an alternative peat free option. I have been trying it & it is a lovely product. Wool act as a slow release fertiliser that holds moisture.

You could also hang bits up for the birds to use for nesting.
