Colocasia advice

NotyalcaNotyalca Posts: 134
Hi,
Im going to be buying colocasia for the garden this year.

Can anyone up north (I’m in Cumbria) tell me how they have overwintered them? In preparation for next winter.

I could keep them as a houseplant, although my house is already packed full of houseplants haha, or could I dig them up and store them like I have my dahlias?   Or do they do ok just fleecing them?

I treat them like Dahlia tubers, has worked well for the last 4 years since I started growing them.
How can you lie there and think of England

Mine have survived the freeze over the last couple of nights. They're in a polytunnel, but not covered in any way.

  • Hi, I am on the south coast and have grown Colocasia and Alocasia since moving here from Cumbria in 2012. I use different methods of storage to try and find out which is the most successful. Some I have left in the pots and placed in the greenhouse which is heated by a homemade 100 hour candle. Last night was very cold and there is evidence of it affecting the leaves but this isn't a problem as long as the frost hasn't got the tuber. See photo:

I have 6 different varieties of both Colocasia and Alocasia. I also have some tubers stored in a cardboard box in dry coco coir fiber. Over the years I have had mixed success with both methods. I think I both situations they have been too moist, so this year I am keeping them almost dry. You are brave growing these in Cumbia. I wish you luck.

Thanks everyone. I think I’ll be safe and dig them up next winter unless I make a space indoors!
