I only bought my first penstemon about 5 years ago - I can't get enough of them now :)

  • @Pete.8 I know......they're addictive!! A keen gardening friend introduced them to me many many years ago,and showed me how to take cuttings. Since then they have been my garden priority!! I love the baby blue ones, but you don't see them so much in garden centres.

I have sandy soil too (but only slightly acid).  Salvias do really well, penstemons do OK but they're not as lush as on richer soils.  Erysmium "Bowles Mauve" flower for ages but aren't long-lived and need replacing with cuttings every few years. Purple linaria self-seeds and flowers for months.  Knautia also flower for a long time and self seed (both the red and the pastel forms).  Some verbascums do well too (Phoenicium varieties particularly).  Single dahlias flower all summer once they get started (I leave mine in the ground over winter).
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

Unlike @Rubytoo I've been quite disappointed with G. Rozanne and G. Mavis Simpson. I can recommend G. x ‘Orkney Cherry’.

  • That Orkney Cherry is beautiful Papi Jo, is that just one plant and what type of soil do you have?  Ours is quite heavy here.  I have tried growing hymalyense but will little success, so have not bothered trying any other geraniums here.

Thanks, @Guernsey Donkey2 . That Geranium is part of a clump of 3 or 4 specimens, and my soil is rather heavy. Currently I have 5 varieties (only) of Geranium, and they all behave differently.
  • That's interesting Papi Jo, I am tempted to give them another try.  I often see offers for them I think Hayloft do a mix of five plants from time to time.

Grandma,  I’ve got loads of geraniums including Rozanne, which flowers for months, it’s a thug but when you have a big border to fill it’s just the job.
I could send you some roots of a few.
