Peony

Wilkos has got there bulbs and tubers in. Saw a Sarah Bernhardt peony for £2. Is it the right time to plant peonies especially with all the snow that has fallen. And who knows what the weather hold for us this year.

I’d pot it up and keep it in a cool greenhouse or coldframe at the moment. You can plant it out when the soil begins to warm up ... they’re hardy but there’s no point in frightening Sarah B to death with this cold weather when she’s been in a nice warm shop. 😉

Yes - and make sure you don't plant too deeply. Keep the main crown of the plant near the surface, to ensure flowering.
It probably won't flower this year, so let it build up a good root system, plant out in the right spot once the weather is suitable in 2 or 3 months, and wait patiently to enjoy it  :)

I bought a Sarah Bernhardt peony from Wilko 4 years ago and planted it in the ground directly. It was in March. But it did take 3 years to flower.
So if you want the flowers this year, I would suggest to buy a flowering one in GC to avoid the risk.
  • I have a peony collection,5 in all, incl Sarah and note the advice re. planting depth my question is the site - the location gets sun all day  and is below a Magnolia and a crab apple, backed by a shrubbery of viburnum and lilac all very well established;do you think it a suitable spot for the peonies.  your advice please, thank you

Have you a photo. If they are under the canopy of trees, they will not get enough sun.

I'd agree with fidget. Even if they did flower, they'd be leaning constantly to get more light.

  • thank you for your replies  it's a corner bed - the tree canopies were  lifted prior to digging out the bed allowing the sun to reach the bed for most of the day.
