Lavender Cuttings

Hi,

This is my first post. I caught the gardening bug last summer and am eager to learn more.

I am new to taking cuttings, but I watched videos and read articles about it. Anyway, I took some lavender cuttings and they have been indoors since late September / early October. None of the cuttings have done anything, which I guess is expected as it's winter. But this past week one of them has had a rapid spurt of new growth. The starting point is the yellow arrow, ending on the red arrow. Is this normal?

I must admit I'm not the best at cuttings, but it does look like your plants are trying to reach the light and conditions in there are little too warm, so it's starting to put on soft growth. I would pinch out any long strands. You want them to thicken out and make nice strong stocky plants rather than stretch out and then flop over. Make sure you don't over water right now, and check the soil is draining well.
  • Thanks for the advice. Okay, I will pinch it out. I thought it was strange as I was expecting them to grow slowly and thicken. Actually, I was expecting them to rot and die like most of my cuttings! I think the drainage is okay, but have probably been over watering, so I will try and avoid doing that from now on.

I took lavender cuttings and they looked like that minus any growth, did not take at all.

Conversely the bowles mauve cuttings I took are now 2 plants in separate pots and growing strongly.

I am not optimistic, but they have at least lasted longer than the first batch of cuttings I took in the summer. They all died quite quickly, probably because it was too hot at the time. I will wait a while longer with these and see if they do take eventually. Fingers crossed!
