Could anyone recommend a good onion that I can plant early in the season and will be quickly to harvest.

I've had quick and reliable harvests from 'Hytech' heat-treated sets. I start them off in modules in a cold GH and plant them out when well rooted.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
