Frost and heavy rain: how to protect plants?

I live in the west of Ireland so my climate is very wet and relatively mild. However, at the moment frost is forecast in between bouts of heavy rain and sleet.

I have a young chaenomeles in flower and when I've propped fleece over it the rain has squashed it down onto the blossom, presumably defeating the purpose. Does anyone have any superior methods for frost protection? Or do I just need to build better fleece props?

Thanks!

chaenomeles is as tough as old boots. You don't need to bother with protection.

I agree with @Hostafan1 ... chaenomeles is one of those glorious shrubs whose blooms make your heart glad in the grimmest of weather. Nothing for you to do but enjoy it.
And don’t forget to use the fruit next autumn.  :)
