Hi All,

Hoping you can help me out. I had a tree previously that died and I had to dig out, I think this was a Salex, it went a beautiful cream/pink colour in the summer. Im looking to now fill the gap with something similar. Has anyone any ideas or can anyone confirm it was actually a Salex from the photos attached (Although it was already dead in the photo).

Was it something like this?

Can you tell us a bit more about the conditions - soil type, how much sun/shade it gets, your local climate? Also what did the previous tree died from? That might help people to recommend suitable replacements.

Hi Jenny,

I'm not to sure why the tree died but was very brittle and didn't flower this summer. Our garden is south facing so will have sunshine all day within the summer months. We're are midlands based. Soil conditions are very sandy from about 600mm deep as we found out when we built our extension. Hope this helps. thanks

Maybe it will give you some ideas.

Salix like moist soil so the combination of sand, full sun and last year's drought could be what killed it, particularly if it was a young one and not fully established.

I have sandy soil myself and the trees doing well in my garden are a purple-leaved plum, a variegated holly , a lilac and an amelanchier. I also have a laburnum which did well but is now getting old and showing it.
