Strange Rubber Plant Help

Hi all! 

My mum made a rubber plant for me with a cutting about 9 months ago. It started to discolour and lose leaves over a month so i decided to de-pot and check the roots as it was not taking up water. I found a very peculiar thing however (photos attached). My mum has no clue what it is. Any ideas? !

    looks like a slow release feed capsule, either that or someone buried a sweetie

    The brown seed-like things look a lot like pine nuts.... :/

    A couple of wild card suggestions!  Has it ever been kept outside - and had the pleasure of a squirrel burying nuts/seeds in it ?

    or could it be some sort of “canker” ?
