Secret garden path laying

So I just mowed the weedy paths last summer to keep neat as too many other things to do. Mostly daisies and seeding into the blinkin borders so will be glad to get rid!!

Next stage is laying out new edging and to put down wood chips. Can I just lay them on this? Or can I put weed suppressant material down or will I have to dig them all out? Hope not as big areas. Thanks

Advice much needed please

i would put membrane down first, you don't want stuff growing up through the mulch, you might want to put a layer of gravel under the membrane to level it out and make the drainage better (wet, half rotten wood chips are a pain to deal with)

Thanks Treehugger80. I live on an island so very hard to get materials here without costing a fortune. Have to get all in a car on my own x will definitely put down membrane. Thanks. The wood chips were my idea as cheap & easy to transport and it's a woodland garden. Any other ideas?
  • I've been doing just the same for twenty-five years and I've always put a membrane down otherwise you get a weedy path in no time flat. Other-half likes it much more than paving stones as it's not skiddy in frosty weather, which is especially important now as we moved and the garden is on somewhat of a slope! Mind you it's also wet in places so I think I will have to use pavers on top of a rammed bed of hard-core (unless anybody has a better idea?) here and there.

Fab DampgardenMan. May do that with a few paving stones in places at a later date. I saw round ones with birds etc in a garden centre which may look not too naff xx
