Rose leaves - should I remove?

Rose121Rose121 Posts: 132
A number of my English roses still have lots of leaves.

Is it best practice to go out and remove them?

If so, should I avoid composting them to minimise future disease, or is this not too big  a garden sin - I'm keen to get any greens i can in the bin at he moment!

    I'd leave well alone.

Me too, unless you've got a lot on blackspot on them.  If we get a prolonged very cold spell, they'll probably drop off then and save you a job.

Thanks! One or two have serious blackspot, so maybe I'll take those off an d leave the rest.

Defoliating roses in winter is something for those who garden in warm climates, to induce dormancy in their roses, as otherwise they may not bloom well in Spring..

For us,, we really don't need to do this, but it won't hurt if you do, I do sometimes remove all the leaves if there are some still hanging on...  I don't care about blackspot, and often leave all the foliage to drop to the ground except in the very worst cases I might put some in my garden waste disposal..
