Plant Identiciation Help

Hi all,

My daughter planted and seed at playgroup and brought it home, quite a while ago now.

It has flowered before and is now starting to flower again... can anyone tell me what the plant is? It’s kept indoors on a window cill, not a particularly warm spot, but seems to like it.

Thank you

Not seen one of them in a while.
    It's a Busy Lizzie (Impatiens)

  • Brilliant! Thank you, Pete 😊 Is it meant to flower in the winter (or is that a really stupid question)

    Thanks again

I think it might be what we call a Busy Lizzie. They are a nice little starter plant and easy to grow.
Looks like you have a blind so it does not get trapped between a curtain and window, so keeps warm enough. They are tender so if they get frosted or too cold they will literally go to mush as they are very "watery" plants. I mean that the stems are full of watery sap.
They also don't do too badly with slightly low light levels.

If you break a piece off (whether deliberate or by accident) they are easy to root in water, so your daughter might like to do that too.  They can then be potted on once roots have grown.

    Good Luck
Sorry Pete, I was typing while you  posted

They'll flower all year if it's happy - which it seems to be.
They were a mainstay of garden bedding until a few years ago when they all became susceptible to Downy Mildew - since then you generally only find the New Guinea variety which isn't susceptible.
Breeders have raised a new variety of the original that isn't susceptible to downy mildew, but only available as plug plants atm I think.

Cutting are easy, just snap a bit off and pop it in a glass of water and it'll grow roots in no time.
But beware the downy mildew... nothing you can do about it though

A busy lizzie. If they love their surroundings, they will flower all year round. I had one that started off as a 2 inch high plant, ended up as a six footer, because it was next to our budgie in his cage and he would talk (real words) continuously to it.
