    Garrya Elliptica 'James Roof'
  • Thank you 😊
  • A lovely shrub fro Winter.
I had a Garrya years ago. My daughter, who was about 4 at the time, was so excited because  ' Mummy was growing a caterpillar tree! '

arcazybts, That is a nice picture of the catkins.

@yorkshirerose Love your daughters observation I hope she was not disappointed when they didn't turn into butterflies.

They are a shrub I have noticed and like, a friend had a huge one in their garden. I might have to see if we could fit one in here just so we can call it the Caterpillar tree :)
  • The picture was taken at a local gardens, I fell in love with it. I would like to buy one that’s about 1.5-2mts tall, does anyone know anywhere in UK that sell this size please?

I think you might need a mortgage to buy one that size... unless you can find one trained on trellis.  They are often grown as wall shrubs.

The biggest I can find on line is 1.3m, here:

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

Oh thank you so much, this is not to far away from where I live. Think one will be joining my garden this year 🤗

If you do find one, give it a sheltered spot.   I lost the one I planted in my Belgian garden to a -15C which was normal for my garden.  Being evergreen makes them more susceptible I think.

  • Thanks Obelixx, I am in south London UK so don’t see temps fall that far. I have a very sheltered spot that I wanted something fabulous for so this will be perfect. I popped into a local tree/shrub nursery today close to home and actually found this shrub there, not as big as I would have liked but £9 for about a metre tall and grown outside seemed to good to pass up. So I fetched it home with me 🤗
