David Austin 'Wild Eve'

suzie15suzie15 Posts: 23
Hi everyone,

I will preface this with the fact that I am a total novice gardener.

I recently bought a David Austin 'Wild Eve' potted rose and planted it in compost and top soil, as I didn't have any hummus as requested. The rose is started to look less green and healthy and I'm worried about it. When should a potted rose start to have any leaves or new growth on it? Should I be looking out for this? Or should I get some hummus and add it retrospectively?

Thanks in advance

Can you show me a photo of your rose please, in your pot... thanks..

Right now, you wouldn't want to see any leaves, not in the middle of winter.. so there's probably nothing to worry about.   I presume you have the rose outside and not in the house?..

Sorry I keep being home after dark so not able to take a picture... but yes it's outside! I will try to take a picture over the weekend.

It just looks less green than it did when I first got it, and I'm worried as it's next to my other miniature roses which got black spot :(
  • hi again! I finally managed to get a picture yesterday! It has some leaves which I've been very pleased to see! Do I need to do anything with it? Thanks!

Jolly good...!.. well you will need to feed it sometime within the next 3 weeks or so.. I've already done a lot of mine due to the weather..  sprinkle some non organic rose food around the base during March... slow release is fine.. miracle gro, something like that..
..best of luck... please show your rose when in bloom later on...

  • Okay, I will! Thanks Marlorena! Also, should I prune my miniature roses now or after the last frost date? Do I just cut a few inches off the stems?

    Thanks!!

For miniature roses a very light prune is in order. Just prune to shape..and don't worry about last frost dates with roses..    best wishes...

  • I would not prune that single lovely young shoot, @suzie15
  • Thank you Marlorena! I'm afraid I have thought of another rose question! There is a large rose bush in the garden (we recently moved here so trying to figure out what everything is) should I also prune this at any time to shape, or should it prune it significantly for good growth this spring? I will try to get a picture soon!
  • Also just wondering, why is it best to use non organic rose food? Just trying to pick these things up! Thanks!
