When the photo started unfolding I thought bulbs of some sort but now I've seen the roots I think it is a day lily, Hemerocallis.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Thank you - they were taken from my son's garden and I don't remember seeing day lilies in there, though it's a good possibility.

Day lily, but when they get congested they won’t flower, good to split them up every three years.

Hi if its not a Day Lily it could be a Hosta clump.
it would still be better to split the clump in two ready for Spring.

I definitely think it's a day lily, John - I've checked online following previous suggestions. Agree that it needs to be split. Thank you.
