Cornus bark scaling

I planted a newly-bought Cornus alba Sibirica at the end of Sept 18. It's ~1-1.5 ft tall. There was a small amount of pale scaling at the base, which the garden centre said not to worry about. The scaling is more extensive now. Does anyone know what causes this & should I be concerned? Thanks

that's just the way Cornus bark goes after a while, that's why we prune them back hard so we get the shiny coloured bark of the young growth
  • Thanks for replying, that's helpful & reassuring

And if you cut it back in March, if you want more plants or to thicken the display up, you can use the cut bits to make more. They root very easily. Just trim the thicker fat stems neatly to under one of those rings (remove any thin side bits) and shove into damp ground there.

  • Good to know that, thanks!
