Strawberry advice please.

Hi everybody. I have been given a large bucket of strawberry plants that were otherwise going to be dumped. So far I have potted out about 20 of them into individual pots, placed these on trays, and put them in my unheated greenhouse. How should I continue to care for them? All advise gratefully received. Thanks. Martin.

  • Were they bare-root runners?  If so, water them once after potting and they will be fine until you see new growth starting in a few weeks, after which just give them enough to keep the soil moist.  Once you see the new leaves appearing, check the roots weekly until they start filling the pot and then plant them out, as long as the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.  You can get an extra early crop if you keep some in the greenhouse and pot them on into larger pots but potted strawberry plants under glass tend not to do as well as those in the ground, especially in subsequent years (with strawberries, your best crops will come in years 2 and 3.)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I agree with Bob, that is just what we did last year with our strawberry plants and they produced a good first year crop, although we hope for even more fruit this year.
  • Thanks everybody. I'll try to find a nice sunny spot for them in the spring. (One that isn't overshadowed by my neighbours' sycamore).
