Pruning Roses

Morning all. When is the best time of year to my prune roses. They are established but it's my first winter in this house caring for them.

Thanks,
Mel

Hi @Melanie 568 There is a thread entitled Rose Pruning dated 11th (Friday) which should be of help to you.

Assuming that you have shrub roses, it's usual to prune them in late winter. I do mine if Feb. There's an RHS article here
If we're talking climbers or ramblers there are different techniques - let us know.

Shrubs and hybrid teas are traditionally done late winter (Feb as per Pete's suggestion) but I remove long whippy growth in autumn to tidy them up and prevent wind rock. Climbers are often done in autumn. Slightly different pruning techniques for the three groups.

The head gardener at Peter Beales Classic Roses told me that you will never kill a rose by pruning it at the wrong time. You can delay the start of flowering by pruning later (which may be desirable to time blooming with a garden opening or a party). They have thousands of roses and wouldn't be able to do them all if they left the job until late winter. They start pruning in late autumn and carry on right through to spring.

You will also not kill a rose by pruning too hard - very tough plants

  • Yes they are shrub roses (i think they are, I've attached pics.) Good to know its hard to kill them too. I'm on a learning curve!

Two lovely roses... the top one is 'Gertrude Jekyll' and the light pink may be 'Gentle Hermione'...   easy to deal with, prune when you like, or not at all,.. you do not have to prune these roses too much if you don't want, just leave them develop - they are shrubs after all...
Otherwise, I prune most of mine in November, if at all..
