I didn't stake mine at all and it's been fine.

Mine is gone in the ground a few weeks, I’m about to stake it as we’re expecting wind. I bought it last year and I am baffled at the way they pruned it at the nursery. It’s top heavy and all the branches that would have given it its characteristic look have been cut.

I would only stake that tree with a short diagonal stake, driven in from where the grass starts, so that you avoid hitting the rootball. The tree can then be secured to the stake using a proper rubber tree stake which can be adjusted. The top looks fine to me, is it a prunus Amanogawa?
