Wetting seed compost

My seed compost refuses to absorb water! I watered from the top then sat the seed tray in a container of water, it is floating but compost still remains dry below the surface. Any hints/tips?

Leave it in a container with 2” of water for a seed tray, I will absorb it.

It might take a while, particularly if it's peat-based compost.  Maybe leave it overnight and then take the tray out of the water and let it drain well. I find it's best to do this before sowing the seeds, then if it's fine surface-sown seed I mist with a spray bottle after sowing to make sure they are moist and have good contact with the compost, without washing them away.

A bit of washing up liquid in the water will help to wet it.
