Eleagnus

My Eleagnus hedge of 12years which has always been healthy has started to die.
The leaves go yellow and dry and the wood brittle. No signs of above ground insects.
The first one died last year now the one next to it. Can Pruning with shears cause this ?.

    I have the one branch die sometimes so I just cut it out.The rest of the shrub eventually fills in the gap.

    I don't think pruning with shears can cause it, but if you see these patches that die back, prune much further back into the thicker wood. The occasional die back can happen, especially with evergreen shrubs.

    If you have quite free draining soil, it might be a good idea to top dress a thick layer of mulch every year to help keep moisture in.
