Busy Beagle

I want to sow some veg seed this year, however I have a very busy beagle who may try and eat seeds. Has anyone any advice regarding toxicity of various seeds?

What veg seeds are you planning to sow?
My dog is also always snuffling about and eats grass and various 'other things' (e.g. manure, blood/fish/bone and the like) she finds - to no ill effect.
I know Laburnum and Castor Oil plant seeds are very toxic to most animal life.
I don't know of any poisonous veg seeds, but I've not done any research either...

There's a list here from Dogs Trust - I have already advised them that they've missed grapes which they are going to add

  • Thanks Pete, I was thinking along the lines of carrots, salad leaves and herbs, as I know leeks garlic  and onions are a no no.

Do toxic seeds grow into edible plants?

Kidney beans?  Can be toxic if not properly boiled for the first 10 or 15 minutes but do grow into edible plants if sown rather than cooked.

Why not just put a fence round the veggie beds?  That would keep the dog off all the veg seeds and seedlings.

I don't think you'll have any problems with those veg. My dog loves a carrot now and then and does munch on lettuce tops occasionally, and parsley, all of which I guess are of no harm to her.
Given the chance she'd all all the runner beans and dwarf beans - she loves them, so I grow dwarf beans under netting and just accept there will be no runner beans below about 2ft 6
I know my dog wouldn't eat raw leeks or onions, she recoils at the smell of raw alliums

As Obelixx has suggested, and I do the same, some bamboo canes and several lines of string keep her off in the growing season - mostly..

  • Thanks for all your advice, it's given me much more confidence, and I will try  some sowing and see how we go.
Alas a fence was tried when I had a rhubarb patch, she enjoyed chewing through the fencing, and learned to flatten the poles! Who would have a beagle !!
