Don't know Crown Prince -Is it one of the big one's or OK for 2 people? Also do they take up plot for a long time? Garden Fair Brochures now pouring in-some nice new one's around Paris, but Stand Space exhorbitant.  Planning new herbs beds for unusual herbs to wrap goat cheeses in and to add to cheesy scones -Ideas welcome. Have loads of Pumpkin Soup in Freezer. Need it at the moment!

It's one of the smaller blue skinned pumpkins and very pretty with tasty orange flesh.  Very good roasted, souped or veggie curried.   We let ours sprawl last year as we have the space but in Belgium I grew all my pumpkins up supports to save space on the ground and get the fruits out in the sun and away from slugs too.  You need to leave them to ripen before harvesting so not the quickest crop but delish.

  • I don't know about being small Obelixx, but maybe when compared to some pumpkins.  I class Crown Prince as a winter squash and fruits are generally between 8" and 10" in diameter which is quite large for a winter squash, especially some butternut types.  I only have one left in storage (bad year for squashes here) but the last (10") one made 4 roast dinners each for the two of us!  They store for many months (usually still have some left in March) if kept in a cool but frost-free place.

Ours were max 8' this year, maybe a function of drought tho I did water regularly.   I like them much more than the butternuts I grew.  Potimarron are good too and better suited to just one meal for 2 people.

Currently got a decent amount of duchy cabbage growing, not grown before (or over wintered) but I'm hopeful it will become a new favourite.

Can we get Crown Prince in France or shall I find some seeds on next trip UK -Or are they mail order only.? I have heard do not grow different varieties in plot as they x pollinate and you don't get what was on the packet? True or false?

False if you save the seeds then you won't know what you'll get next year but this years crop will not be affected.

Try Kokopelli BF.   From identified seed you will get the true pumpkin but any seeds you save from your own plants may well be hybrids of whatever else you grew around them.

Ah -That's why the seeds I saved from the Pumpkins I liked last year turned out realy weird although tasty. Will take your advice and buy fresh this year. Yes I know Kokopelli -Super Range, will take a look on Internet.

I buy from reputable seed firms but grow my own Runner Beans that are known as The "Stenner Strain", bred by the great man himself, sadly long gone, the beans still crop very well.
