    Mainly cloudy and breezy with one or two sunny bits. Chilly in the wind/shade.

    Dry, 9⁰. So mild I decided to put a wash on to dry outside, so now the temperatures are set to drop tonight. Apologies to SW folk for invoking that.
  • Holy crap, went down to the road to get the mail and the wind blew tears out of my eyes that promptly froze to my face!  -1F with a wind chill of -23F at the moment.  At this point, it doesn't matter how much colder it will get...it's just stupidly, ridiculously, mind-numbingly cold. :s

    @CrankyYankee 🥶🥶🥶 harsh!
    You get some cold on the chilly East side don't you? We'll probably be getting some of that cold air in the UK soon then.
  • I hope it warms up a little before it hits you!  At least I'm not above the White Mountains; they are looking at -50 and colder.  I don't know if this link will work for you, but Mount Washington could get as cold as -100 overnight.  Ummm, totally NOT necessary, Mother Nature.

  • I spent a Christmas with my son in Canada, they live in the foothills of the Rockies, not far from Banff.
    A wind storm came in the night before I was due to come home. There were warnings on the radio all day, do not touch anything metal, do not go out without gloves or hats, and old people were told to stay inside.
    The wind chill factor went down to -40C.
    I took the dog for a walk before leaving and it was the most painful walk I have ever done. Everyone wears wrap-around sunglasses because your eyes keep watering and the tears freeze on your eyelashes so you cannot see, when you breathe in your lungs hurt from the cold air, and the poor dog had to stop every few yards to pull ice balls from between his pads.
    There is very little moisture in the air in that area but what there was froze into minute ice crystals so it was like walking in a wonderland, so beautiful, by the river, near the mountains surrounded by sparkling crystals. Magical. But painfully cold.
  • @Joyce Goldenlily quite similar to what we just experienced, but I think they get this more often out west.  We usually don't go much more than twenties below zero F, and even then it doesn't generally last more than a few days.

    Hi,
    You are correct. In the Calgary area the average winter daytime temperature  is -10 and -20 at night, and they do or did have rather a lot of snow. Their winter usually begins in Sept/Oct with an overnight "dump" of 5/6ft of snow which doesn't clear until April time. Then it is ice floes and the Spring melt.
    It is a spectacular area where my son lives, in the foothills of the Rockies but I would not want to live there.
    No one has a cultivated garden because of the extremes of temperature, their summer only lasts about 6 weeks, there is about 2 weeks for Spring and Autumn, the rest of the year is winter, not long enough growing season for me, and the cold is cruel.
