What has happened to these carrots and beets? New vegetable bed at an old farmhouse in North Devon.

    They’ve been eaten ... I can see signs of slugs as well as gnawing by rodents ... could be voles, rabbits, rats .... some or all of them. 

    I would have harvested and stored them before winter.  You can leave some varieties of carrots in the ground if protected from frost, but they are tempting to hungry wildlife. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
