Garden re vamp

I have been in my new house, Mildenhall Suffolk, for a year and this spring would like to tackle the large garden 20m x 12m).  It is south facing laid mainly to lawn (very very loose description). The drainage is not the best but the 'lawn' is mainly weeds. My budget is small. Shall I poison it all first, if so with what, then wait before I rotivate it and spread new seed? All advice welcome.

Hi Greenfields, Is this a new home as in newly built, or just that you have moved to a new to you house?
As you say your budget is small I think that if there is at least some useful desirable grasses in it then use a weed and feed in spring rather that kill it all.

If you do not want perfect and can work on it over time it can look reasonable without too much money spent on it gradually work it back into a more traditional grassy area.
You will need to get some grass seed mix to fill in areas once the weeds are killed off.

Quite a few weeds notice less and some are even killed off or reduced with good grass care.
Also once it gets growing again in spring. Don't cut it too short. Leave the mower on a high setting and tip it more frequently, only lower the blades once you have better thicker grass.

And a good scarify at the right time can really help if there is a lot of old thatch moss and weeds.
It can look dreadful but works wonders.
Energetic with a springy rake? Or you can buy or hire a motorized one.

    What budget do you have?
One persons small is another ones big :)

Other people do not mind weeds and they can look pretty in flower.

If it is a new build then it probably has compacted layers underneath whole new ball game if you want to dig it all over and try to improve it.
  • Thanks for your reply. It is a new build on a previously owned piece of land where an old house once occupied so I'm guessing there will be builders rubble etc below the surface. I was hoping to only spend around £200. There is not much moss just course grass and weeds.

We had a similar "lawn" when we moved in to our present house (hadn't been occupied for 18 months although the grass had been cut).  I suggest that with careful regular mowing as Rubytoo suggests coupled with employing somebody from the "Green Thumb" franchise or similar would be easier and well within your budget. They will come and measure your lawn, give you a detailed report and a quote for improvement. They have access to better weedkillers/lawn fertilisers than you can buy. They will also scarify and/or aerate the lawn (at an additional cost). We pay approx. £100 per year (4 visits) for our size lawn. We've had them now about 6 years or so - best thing we've ever done for the garden. (no connection to the company).

  • Thanks. I hadn't thought about someone like them. Might get a free quote.
